VE Day

Post by Poshay » 08 May 2020, 07:40

I don't remember much about the original one as a 4 year old apart from there being a huge bonfire on the rec at Lowerhouses. Then there were the black and white newsreels at the Lyceum down in Hudds. It was a much different world in those days .

I remember even less as I was nothing but a twinkle in my father’s eye

It is a far better world we live in now

Once we get through this virus mess

I'm pleased to see Germany is also celebrating the end of the war and the end of nazi rule

I was just approaching my 9th Birthday and my Father was in the Police Force. A great day of celebration in Ramsey where we had Forces of all Nationalities including the G.I.'s so plenty of sweets and chewing gum. That generation will never be forgotten nor ever equalled for courage and discipline.
People were much nicer and much more helpful to one another, less selfish and believe it or not much more content. You do not need to own possessions to be "rich" in life.

Exactly. And whatever possessions you might have become absolutely unimportant when you become a carer for the one you love.

VE Day was celebrated quietly here in rural Lincolnshire ; just toasting eachother across the roadway following Churchill's speech at 3pm. Followed up with an evening's TV nostalgia.
