What Are You Listening To?

Post by Gaz_Miller » 18 Feb 2020, 10:22

We need a thread to introduce new music to each other.

First up.....

The new album by The Blind Staggers - 'Doing Alright...Considering' is a thing of beauty.

I think some of the old coffin dodgers on here may not be your best source of musical ideas. For my part I’m still stuck between the noughties a d the tens. Best three albums for me from the noughties, were Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World and the much maligned Blink 182s eonymous album, although that wasn’t a patch on Enema of the State. The standout being My Chemical Romance’s wonderful The Black Parade.
In the tens not many albums stood out for me but odd tracks from As It Is and The Faim certainly stood out. The saddest parts were the deaths of Chester Bennington of Linkin Park and his mate Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave fame. What was surely a tribute song One More Light was probably one of the best songs this century so far.

Toy Dolls playlist. I've Got Asthma, James Bond lives Down My Street, and The Devil Went To Scunthorpe.

Plus of course Nellie the Elephant

This morning I have been listening to Songs for Polar Bears by Snow Patrol, what a truly awful album that was, I suppose a lot of bands have initially been 'pony'. I mean 'Please Please Me' was no Sgt Pepper or Let It Be

Yes, both of them

If it's top tunes from that era you require, you could do far worse than listen to Arrows.

They wrote I Love Rock N Roll that Joan Jett did a cover of and had a big hit with.

They also had a TV series. Sadly their singer and songwriter Alan Merrill is now dead. Or is it the guitarist Jake hooker?

Can't believe how much I got to them.

Bless their little hearts.

...and welcome to the board both of you. If you want a best of try this, Greatest Hit (...And 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs) by Dream Theater, truly amazing that such a great band has only troubled the scorers once a number ten hit in the nineties. For me, I’ve already made up my mind I want ‘The Spirit Carries On’ played at my funeral.

All of them appear in my playlist somewhere. I’m not really an album person if I like a track I like it, and can’t put up with the rest of the filler on said album. Example the Disturbed album immortalized I can’t listen to but the tracks The Sound of Silence and The Light are possible two of the greatest tracks from the genre.

I'll give some of those a try on Spotify but I have previously struggled with System Of A Down, which has put me off Dream Theater

It was just a bit too shouting and overdriven for me.

However, I really liked At The Drive In a while back. If you haven't heard it you will probably like some of Relationship Of Command.

I quite like their earlier stuff, much prefer the female vocals at the front.

I used to play discos at University and would ALWAYS play Nellie the Elephant

It always got a few people looking down their noses at it to start

but it always ended as the most popular record on the night

long live Mandy Miller!!

I find the mix of both male & female vocals just right. They play off each other.

Seriously, the new album is well worth a listen.

I've got into Murder by Death too. Very similar type of music.

There is so much good music out there it amazes me why some people stick with Sinatra, Presley etc etc
